Malawi- The Return

We are traveling back out to Malawi in 1 week…………I’d firstly like to say- where did 2007 go?! Surely it’s not been a whole year since we were last there?

I’m obviously excited about going out again, also a bit overwhelmed because it’s all been a bit last minute, and as happened at quite a busy time which I think is the case for all of us. I think it will be particularly exciting as we are going out at Christmas, which will provide an extra experience in itself. Christmas is the most intriguing thing for me at the moment, because I’m wondering how or if the families and children we will be working with celebrate Christmas. It almost sounds ignorant in the way I’m saying it, but I genuinely don’t know what to expect so I’m very interested to find out! What excites me further (more…)

Bournville Village Trust, Time Bank Residential - Volunteer Training 07

The groups below are from different areas around Birmingham and are all participating in Bournville Village Trusts, Time Bank programme. The programme offers all volunteers involved the opportunity to build up credits for their hours spent volunteering, for example 1 hour = 1 credit. These credits can then be used to further their own skills, for example taking driving lessons or specific training courses etc.

Below are some pictures of what the volunteers discussed over the course. One of the main issues for most of the groups, was that there is nothing to do in their areas, as well as graffiti, litter and drugs. Some of the groups will be working as a group and running events like litter picks and football coaching for their areas. But most (more…)

What is volunteering?!

volunteering I’m not in favour of young people being ‘paid to volunteer’ in fact I’m strongly against it. Nothing in my experience has demonstrated any need to do this - of course all volunteers should have their expenses covered but talk of payment is simply a desperate act to recruit to ‘fill the figures’ in my opinion. I am in favour of young people being paid where they earn it and where its appropriate - but this is not volunteering.

To further complicate the definition of volunteering (or lack of) now CSV (Community Service for Volunteering) are apparently suggesting that there could be a compulsory service of volunteering! Quite how ‘compulsory’ and ‘volunteering’ have been (more…)
