Youth Work Guide to Blogging
We started this blog less than a year ago last July. It wasn’t our first attempt - we ran one for a short while before going to Tanzania in 2005 but it never really took off. I for one just never ‘got into it’ and I didn’t much see the point. I knew what we were doing back then would be interesting but I wasn’t sure it was interesting enough to other people to bother writing about (after all who reads blogs?!).
About 2 years ago we then started to develop an online volunteer network for young people involved with the programme we used to run. From this I became much more interested in the use of online networking and I searched mostly in vain for any sort of online networks related to working with young people in the UK. Through my searches I did find Tim Davies though after discovering he was trying to encourage the use of social media in the youth work sector. Subsequently I met up with Tim and it was from that meeting that Tim had got me thinking about giving blogging another go.
Of course we did and although we’re still finding our way a bit with the Late Breakfast Society I think its pretty well established now and its become a central part to the YoMo website.
Tim has recently laid out a very good case on his own blog to try and encourage more Youth Workers to blog. Through the subsequent discussions I suggested that a guide to ‘how to blog’ might be useful which you can find attached below.

This looks great
Will test it out with a few people next week and throw in some comments
And really useful to help me thinking about developments of the one page guide series…
Tim
Thanks Tim - I think there might be a case for a little mini series - something like:
1. General guide (as above)
2. Technical guide (managing a blog)
3. Guide to writing specifically for youth work topics
4. Promoting your blog
If so I’m happy to edit them all up so they have a similar look & feel + if DK does the funky video too that gives us a brilliant overall resource we can all use on our travels.
I’ll give some thought to what might go into topic no. 3 and I’m sure there will be more ideas from people soon + after chats with DK for the film content.

I’ve just discovered this one pager - are there any restrictions on using it with youthworkers? I’m probably going to get the job of looking at our social media strategy and information such as the one pager would be great.
Thanks
Hi Hilary - please do use it as much as you possibly can and without any restrictions!
