Malawi- The Return

December 1st, 2007 by kirsty | Filed under Africa & Overseas.

We are traveling back out to Malawi in 1 week…………I’d firstly like to say- where did 2007 go?! Surely it’s not been a whole year since we were last there?

I’m obviously excited about going out again, also a bit overwhelmed because it’s all been a bit last minute, and as happened at quite a busy time which I think is the case for all of us. I think it will be particularly exciting as we are going out at Christmas, which will provide an extra experience in itself. Christmas is the most intriguing thing for me at the moment, because I’m wondering how or if the families and children we will be working with celebrate Christmas. It almost sounds ignorant in the way I’m saying it, but I genuinely don’t know what to expect so I’m very interested to find out! What excites me further is the activities we have planned for the children this year. From English lessons to making twig Santas, I think this will prove to be very challenging but fun at the same time! We learnt from experience that things don’t often go to plan, so if your expecting to be running an art session with 10 children, it’s more likely it could be 30!

Luckily, the long journey, covering London, Amsterdam, Kenya and Malawi will give me a lot of time to think purely about sessions and back up plans, besides the hokey cokey which is always a good one! I think this time, as we are spending more time at the orphanage, in the village with the children and workers I want to gain a real understanding of their lives, their feelings, interests and use that experience to think of ways which we can support them effectively. At the moment, I think Ernest, the director of the orphanage will benefit from this the most as the group and building work is just in the early stages, however I think it will be beneficial to find out what skills we can really offer to help the lives and the futures of the children in some way. I think for a lot of us, this Christmas will be one we will remember for a long time, and no doubt we’ll be reporting back soon!

Moni Wa Chikondwelero Cha X’mas (Merry Christmas)
