Bournville Village Trust, Time Bank Residential - Volunteer Training 07

October 31st, 2007 by mas | Comments | Filed in Courses & Events

The groups below are from different areas around Birmingham and are all participating in Bournville Village Trusts, Time Bank programme. The programme offers all volunteers involved the opportunity to build up credits for their hours spent volunteering, for example 1 hour = 1 credit. These credits can then be used to further their own skills, for example taking driving lessons or specific training courses etc.

Below are some pictures of what the volunteers discussed over the course. One of the main issues for most of the groups, was that there is nothing to do in their areas, as well as graffiti, litter and drugs. Some of the groups will be working as a group and running events like litter picks and football coaching for their areas. But most (more…)

At 4:15am earlier last week we finally finished the film from our last visit to Malawi (in December & January). Originally we’d planned to have this done by Easter!! But a year of complete madness meant that never happened but finally its in a viewable format.

We showed it at the Practical Ideas for Participation event on Thursday evening - if you didn’t attend or fancy seeing it again here it is. (more…)

The Right To Not Participate

October 30th, 2007 by mas | Comments | Filed in Participation & Citizenship

I commented in a discussion a while ago that one of the features of the right for children and young people to participate was also the right to choose not to participate. After I’d said it I wasn’t quite sure if it was actually what I’d meant to say! Then it sounded a bit dumb - so why would people in the youth participation field be interested in young people that choose not to participate?

Lots of reasons probably - like investigating why they don’t want to participate, looking at creative ways to encourage them to change their mind and & so on. But what about respecting their choice simply not to - would this be (more…)

Crime Busters - YouthAct!

October 29th, 2007 by kirsty | Comments | Filed in Courses & Events

P1070528This group are all in year 8 at a school in Eltham. Some of the issues they raised with regards to them and others in their community were crime, not enough buses, teenage pregnancy, violence within gangs and feeling unsafe. After reviewing their likes and skills they decided that some of the opportunities they would like to do would be to raise awareness of crime through drama, dance, or film, integrate people with a culture event, or start a club. The wrong attitude, money, disagreements and lack of knowledge and understanding were barriers which may prevent the group following any of these opportunities through. Thinking realistically, the group decided (more…)

Practical Ideas for Participation - a brief review

October 27th, 2007 by mas | Comments | Filed in Courses & Events

Having had a reasonable nights sleep I thought I’d get down my own thoughts following this weeks Practical Ideas for Participation event in Chester, based on peoples comments, surveys returned, talking to our own staff & volunteers and my own observations. I want to get this up early too to give other people a chance to comment which will be helpful for us putting together a future similar event.

Concept:
I think the concept was good and there was clearly interest and support for the idea of an event where practitioners come together and exchange ideas and knowledge in a non traditional conference type format. For future events it would be helpful for us to make the ‘topic’ more specific (Participation is a broad term) - so perhaps things more like ‘Practical ideas for (more…)

Practical Ideas for Participation - The one that got away?!………….

October 27th, 2007 by mas | Comments | Filed in Courses & Events

width=”400″ height=”360″ align=”center”

  1. Abi from Participation Works Network England is clearly shocked by the claim of Tim from Practical Participation
  2. Niall looks on enviously at the claims by Hugh from the Youth Participation Project
  3. Pippa from North East Lincolnshire Council is having some trouble convincing people
  4. Rosie from London Youth Youth Action doesn’t look at all impressed with hers
  5. Krishna from Children’s Rights Alliance England has the audience captivated with her story about the size of hers
  6. David from the Scarman Trust is somewhat modest about his
  7. Liz from the University of Manchester gives an analysis of hers
  8. Liz from Salford Children’s Services explains how she handled hers
  9. Never one to be modest - Ez from YoMo tells it ‘as it is’
  10. Rosie from London Youth Youth Action seems to have forgotten how small it actually was
  11. Tiana from Changemakers provides a virtual description of the one that got away……

So the question is…… what were they talking about?……..

What’s Really Good?, Lewisham - YouthAct! - Hebden Bridge

October 22nd, 2007 by kirsty | Comments | Filed in Courses & Events

P1070585This group of young adults recognised many positive and negative issues within their community in Lewisham. Some negative issues were teenage pregnancy’s, high rates of STI’s, gangs, and a lack of young role models which also contributes to a negative image of young people. Some of the possible opportunities for the group which could help them contribute positively to their community would be to research the target audience, develop skills, self esteem, approach individuals, agencies schools and celebrities to raise awareness, community events along with drama and music activities. However, some barriers which could prevent this would be targeting an audience, increasing knowledge of the issue, and lack of support for the campaign. Therefore, it (more…)

Youth Workers are my TOSHiba Laptop

October 17th, 2007 by kirsty | Comments | Filed in Courses & Events, Participation & Citizenship, Society & Issues

Over the past few years whilst being involved with youth work/participation/training, myself and a lot of others have come to notice and question- ADULTS. Its often quite rare that we come across an adult who is supporting their group properly and effectively- I know this because a lot of time is spent complaining about the ones who don’t! Sometimes, the adults create more of a problem than the young people. Just recently I have found adults we are working with to be very challenging towards me/us- in a way where it’s not questions to find out information etc- questions to catch you out or (more…)
